How Do You Create a Funny Work Presentation?

Is it possible to create a funny work presentation? Yes, I believe, it is possible to create a funny work presentation. There are many different methods that I have come across to do this, but before you even think about creating a funny work presentation you need to be prepared.

Only once you have laid the appropriate groundwork, can you begin work on making your presentation funny. Think of it like building a house; you wouldn’t build it from the roof down you need to lay a solid foundation first. This is what we’re going to cover here.

Funny Work Presentation – Your Main Point

I’ve seen more than my fair share of long-winded rambling presentations, as I’m sure you have. People often think “I’m the Manager, clearly I know the subject” and then tend to talk until their time’s up. This isn’t the most effective way to go about crafting your presentation.

You should get clear on your point first. What is it that you want to get across to your listeners? When the dust settles and your presentation is over, what’s the one thing your audience should take away from your presentation? What’s in it for your audience? Why do they care?

Remember, you are using humour as a method to convey your message. It’s not the message itself.

Funny Work Presentation – Your Supporting Point

The next step towards creating your funny work presentation lies in the supporting ideas you use that back up your main point.

I wouldn’t use too many supporting ideas three is often enough, but you can expand to 4 or 5 if needed. However, I would really consider those additional points and see if it’s possible for you to cut them first.

These supporting ideas will be borne out of your main point. Take a moment to scribble your thoughts on paper, if that approach works best for you, and you will be able to find those smaller points.

Funny Work Presentation – Your Supporting Evidence

Just as there needs to be evidence in order to prosecute a crime, so there needs to be evidence to back up your supporting ideas and overall point. Whatever evidence you use, you should always cite your sources. Tell your listeners where you got your proof from.

You can’t just bust out a literary quote and pretend that it’s your own; people will know and that’s the fastest way to lose your credibility. You should preclude any quote with “as [insert name of author] once said…” You also need to be specific you can’t just say “Science tells us…” what science? Where’s your evidence?

Once you’ve done this part of the preparation think about if there is room for any humorous evidence that you can use with your supporting ideas?

Don’t force it and don’t be too concerned if you cannot find or come up with any. It’s just that this is a good place to provide humour for your audience. This is your first step towards creating the humour for your funny work presentation.

Funny Work Presentation – Your Supporting Stories

You can also tell a story instead of just providing cold hard facts all the time. Stories are a great way for you to connect with your audience, especially if it’s a story that is personal to you and not one regurgitated from a collection of stories like the Chicken Soup series of books.

Again, stories can be a good place for humour. Be careful though that the stories don’t suffer too much from “you had to be there syndrome”. A clean, humorous story (that a lot of your work colleagues can relate to) can be good.

Are there stories that you already tell at work? Are they appropriate to your presentation? If so, they can provide the raw material you need for your funny work presentation.

Make sure the stories that you tell are visual, really paint the picture and set the scene for your audience. No need to go overboard; just provide them with enough detail to draw them in.
